Houston police have arrested a driver on suspicion of driving while intoxicated (DWI) after he collided into two barriers along the Eastex Freeway early Wednesday.
The accident took place near the Tidwell exit in Houston, at about 2am. According to the police, the driver's vehicle struck an inside barrier on the freeway and subsequently bounced over and struck the outside barrier.
Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the accident. The driver sustained minor injuries, for which he received treatment prior to being taken into police custody for DWI.
Drunk driving is one of the most dangerous hazards we face every time we get behind the wheel of a car, ride as a passenger or even take to the streets as bicyclists or pedestrians. According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about one-third of nationwide traffic fatalities occur in accidents involving drunk drivers, who have blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of .08% or greater.
In Texas, it is illegal for a driver to operate a vehicle while with a BAC of .08% or greater or while his or her abilities are impaired by alcohol or drugs. This law is in place for the protection of all motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and others who may be injured in accidents caused by drunk drivers who cannot safely operate their vehicles.
In addition to facing criminal charges and penalties such as incarceration, fines and driver's license suspension, drunk drivers may be held financially accountable for injuries they inflict on others. Victims of drunk driving accidents may be able to pursue financial compensation from at-fault drivers for medical bills, future medical treatment, lost earnings, property damage, emotional trauma and other injuries or losses they have experienced. These damages are typically paid through the drunk driver's auto insurance policy, though additional sources of compensation may be pursued, depending on the circumstances.
