Blue Bell Creameries - the maker of Blue Bell brand ice cream - has made national headlines after it was discovered in March that some of its products were contaminated with listeria, a harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness and death.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), several samples of ice cream showed the presence of listeria, and several cases of serious illness and death have been reported in various states - including multiple deaths in Kansas.
Although Blue Bell has recalled some of its products following reports of serious infections, it wasn’t until earlier this week - April 20 th - that the company voluntarily recalled all of its products, including:
- Ice cream
- Frozen yogurt
- Frozen snakes
These products have been recalled in all 23 states where they are currently marketed, as well as some international locations. Federal officials are strongly encouraging consumers not to eat Blue Bell products and to throw them away or return them as soon as possible. Listeria can cause serious infections and complications, especially among children, older individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
