Byetta / Januvia Lawsuits
Were you injured by your type 2 diabetes prescription?
Byetta (exenatide) and Januvia (sitagliptin) are both prescription drugs used to combat type 2 diabetes. Although these drugs are manufactured by different pharmaceutical companies, they are prescribed for the same purpose and have also resulted in similar patient harms. The Houston pharmaceutical injury attorneys at Stern Law Group are now taking on cases for clients who have suffered the negative side effects of Byetta or Januvia.
"Byetta" is the brand name for Exenatide. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2005 as a treatment for type 2 diabetes. This drug is administered by injection twice a day. The drug is manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceuticals. One of the first Byetta lawsuits was filed in 2008.
"Januvia" is the brand name for Sitagliptin. It is manufactured by Merck & Co. and prescribed to those with type 2 diabetes. It is taken orally and is often the preferred type 2 diabetes treatment because of its fewer side effects.
Byetta and Januvia Side Effects
Both Byetta and Januvia have been suggested as possible causes of fatal pancreatitis, although the FDA has found no definite link between these diabetes drugs and pancreatitis, the FDA required that the drug manufacturing companies include this risk on the warning labels.
In a recent medical study,
Researchers at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore analyzed the medical records of 1,269 people with type 2 diabetes who filled at least one prescription for any diabetes drug over a three-year period. The researchers found 87 of the patients who developed pancreatitis were taking Byetta or Januvia, while 58 of the people who developed pancreatitis were taking some other diabetes drug.
Pancreatitis is a medical condition that causes the pancreas to become inflamed. If you take Byetta or Januvia and experience the following side effects, notify your doctor immediately:
- Burning abdominal pain
- Nausea / Vomiting
- Internal bleeding
- Elevated heart and respiratory rates
- Fever or jaundice (yellowing of the skin)
- Unexpected or rapid weight loss
Pancreatitis, if left untreated, can lead to pancreatic cancer. There are two basic types of pancreatitis: mild acute and severe acute. Symptoms are worse with severe acute pancreatitis (mortality rate 2-9 percent). Again, if you notice signs of pancreatitis then contact your doctor immediately, then seek legal counsel from Stern Law Group.
