A firefighter suffered third-degree burns while battling a fire at a Baytown, Texas home Tuesday night.
According to reports, a large doublewide mobile home caught fire. The family escaped safely, but the fire was so intense that it quickly consumed the home. The Baytown Fire Department brought in three tanker trucks and the Crosby and Highlands Fire Departments joined in to try to fight the blaze, but the home was completely destroyed.
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
Firefighters & On-the-Job Injuries
Firefighters are often placed in hazardous situations while performing the duties associated with their jobs. They may be at risk of suffering severe burns, as in the case above, or of suffering from smoke inhalation and exposure to dangerous substances like asbestos, lead and other chemicals in burning buildings. Firefighters bravely face these hazards and are rightly seen as heroes for their efforts. But what can they do if they are injured on the job?
Depending on the case, an injured firefighter may be eligible for workers' compensation or other benefits if injured in the line of duty. This may include medical care and income benefits while the firefighter is disabled and unable to work. In Texas, workers' compensation is a state benefit and this means that it is not mandatory for career or volunteer firefighters. It is important to find out whether you are covered, and a Houston work injury lawyer at Stern Law Group may be able to help in this regard.
