With December holidays just around the corner, many people have begun shopping for gifts for their loved ones. For young children, unwrapping presents can be one of the fondest memories of the year. However, it can also be one of the most dangerous. In fact, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that between the 2010 and 2014, 173,300 children under the age of 15 suffered toy-related injuries and received emergency-room care as a result.
To keep your children free from injuries this holiday season, consider the four safety tips we have listed below:
1. Do Your Research
Before purchasing a gift for a child, make sure to research the product. Consider any reviews stating poor quality, design, or construction of the toy. Especially pay attention to any reported safety hazards that may be listed under the product’s review section.
2. Follow Age and Use Guidelines
Most toys list a specific age for which the toy is intended. If the item you are looking at purchasing has an age listed, make sure to only buy the toy if the children for whom you are buying it is of or over the designated age. Many people buy toys without paying attention to this detail. Failure to consider a child’s age can lead to serious accidents such as small children swallowing and choking on tiny items.
3. Always Read, Then Supervise
If your child receives a gift from a friend or family member, be sure to read the instruction pamphlet or guideline brochure before allowing your child access to the product. This can warn you of any potential hazards before your child plays with the new item. When your child does take possession of the item, it is important that you supervise the playing process. This can prevent a child from using the toy incorrectly and causing damage to his or herself.
4. Keep an Eye Out for Recalls
Before and after you have purchased a toy for your child, look out for any recall announcements. Recalls on toys can be found on the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website.
