A recent article published on KVUE (ABC) tells the story of 13-year-old Logan Wyatt, a Texas “star athlete” who excelled in football at Giddings Middle School. That was, until he suffered a serious concussion during an off-season drill. Now, the once active middle schooler spends much of his time in physical therapy.
These days, Logan cannot endure even brief car rides without becoming nauseous, nor can he take part in school pep rallies and other activities with too many sounds and colors without feeling physically ill. Once an honors student, Logan is now failing the ninth grade because he simply cannot keep up.
Logan is one of 200,000 kids that are treated in emergency rooms each year for serious sports-related head injuries.
Texas Schools Not Required to Report Sports Injuries
Logan’s mother filed a lawsuit against the school district on October, alleging that other students have been injured in the past under similar circumstances. The trouble is, however, that these allegations are difficult to prove; the school district does not keep track of all its sports injuries because it is not required to do so under Texas law. There is currently no reliable way to determine how many injuries are taking place in Texas junior high and high school sports. Only one in five schools are required to file weekly injury reports, and then usually only in one sport: football.
Kids who suffer concussions while playing sports can suffer serious medical problems, including memory loss and other cognitive and physical impairments. Not only can this make day-to-day activities difficult, but like Logan, it can severely impact their ability to excel in school and can place limitations on their futures.
