Recently, the University of Minnesota, Morris, with help from various contributions from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, studied a new method used by Schneider, a truckload and transportation service. The study concluded that Schneider’s new methods, composed of the following two practices, have caused positive outcomes to surface.
- Schneider began screening truck drivers for obstruct sleep apnea disorders
- Schneider began monitoring sleep apnea treatment as part of their program
What Type of Treatment are Schneider Truck Drivers Utilizing?
As treatment, Schneider truck drivers who suffer from sleep apnea receive auto-adjusting positive airway pressure treatment (APAP), which can be used in the sleeper berths of their trucks or in their homes. At the end of the study, researchers concluded that drivers who did not adhere to the sleep apnea treatment program laid out by Schneider were five times more likely to be involved in preventable, serious truck accidents than those who did adhere to the treatment program. In addition, researchers found that truck drivers with obstructive sleep apnea who abided by the treatment program had similar statistics as those drivers without obstructive sleep disorders.
The lead author of the article and the professor at the University of Minnesota added that according to statistics, if 1,000 truck drivers were evaluated over the course of a year, the untreated truck drivers suffering from obstructive sleep apnea would be involved in 70 accidents. However, if the drivers with sleep apnea were treated on a normal basis, only 14 accidents would occur.
