Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

From sporty bikes to cruisers, there seems to be a bike for everyone. Unfortunately, the exposed nature of motorcycles can leave riders susceptible to serious, sometimes fatal, injuries when an accident occurs.

If you have been harmed during a motorcycle collision, Stern Law Group can help. Our Houston motorcycle accident lawyers have over 150 years of combined experience practicing personal injury law, and we are here to help you.

What Are the Most Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents?

Riders on the road should be aware of the most common motorcycle accidents, and the best practices to prevent them.

Common causes include:

  • A car changing lanes in front of you
  • A car turning left into you
  • Hazardous road conditions

Car Changes Lanes

When the driver of another vehicle is unaware of a motorcyclist’s presence, it immediately endangers the rider. This can be caused by the vehicle’s blind spots, but can also occur when a driver doesn’t actively look for motorcyclists on the road.

One preventative measure you can take as a motorcyclist is to watch for indications that another vehicle will be changing lanes, such as the driver turning their head, or using their blinker. Make sure to spend little to no time in a car’s blind spot. If you can’t see the driver in his or her mirrors, it’s safe to assume that they can’t see you either. To that end, it is a good idea to wear bright or noticeable gear while riding.

Car Turns Left Into You

This is the most common cause of vehicle-motorcycle collisions. The driver may not have seen you, they may have misjudged your speed, or perhaps they failed to indicate that they were turning left. No matter the reason, these types of collisions can result in serious injuries, even fatality, for the motorcyclists involved.

As always, make sure you are noticeable to drivers on the road. Pay attention to the vehicles around you, and look for clues that the vehicle may be turning, such as where the driver is looking, or the direction the wheels are pointing.

It is never in your best interest to “lay your bike down.” Instead, use both brakes to decrease your speed as much as possible, even if the collision is inevitable. Slowing down by even 10 or 20 mph can make a huge difference in outcome, possibly saving your life.

Road Hazards

Roads hazards affect riders and drivers differently. Smaller obstacles have a bigger impact on motorcycles due to the smaller and more flexible nature of the bike itself. Whether the hazards come from weather conditions, potholes, or simply uneven lanes, a collision could result in serious, even catastrophic, injury to a rider.

For these reasons, it is important to be aware of all surroundings on the road. This includes looking for slick spots, irregularities in the road, and other factors that could affect your ride. Slow down, be aware, and ride defensively in order to avoid these obstacles.
