Driving is something that requires your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and mind focused on. However, there are many distractions in day-to-day life that can disrupt you from fully focusing on what’s in front of you.
Accidents related to distracted driving are a huge issue in the U.S. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 9 people are killed and 1,000 more are injured each day in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver.
Here are things you can do to eliminate distractions and ensure you drive with the necessary precautions to ensure you and others stay safe on the road.
1. Make Adjustments Before Hitting the Road
It’s important to get all of your vehicle systems situated before you begin driving. Make sure your mirrors, seat, and GPS systems are adjusted prior to getting on the road. Change your CD or pick a radio station so you don’t have to do so while driving.
2. Snack Smart
Eating and drinking while driving is a common distraction on the road and requires you to take one or both hands off of the wheel. If you have to eat on the road, choose something that is not very messy and easier to manage while you are driving.
3. Secure Children and Pets
Make sure infants and children are properly secured in car seats and have their seat belts fastened. If they need your attention, pull over to address the situation. When traveling with animals, it’s a good idea to secure them in cages so they do not run around the vehicle, causing distractions and potentially keeping you from steering.
4. Have Passengers Help
When driving with passengers, ask them to help you navigate by giving you verbal commands so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. They can also help if you need to reach for something in the backseat or on the floor.
5. Put Electronics Aside
Texting and driving is one of the major causes of distractions behind the wheel as well as distracted driving-related accidents. Remember, no text is as important as safety. Turn your ringer off while you are driving so you are not tempted to look down or answer a text or call.
