Back to school is a thrilling time for kids, but all that excitement can lead to kids running out into the street or between parked cars. We know that parents driving children to school can also be distracted or in a hurry to get to work themselves. Because the number of accidents can rise during back to school time, we offer some safety tips to ensure you and your children stay safe.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that, between 2006 and 2015, 113 kids were killed riding school buses and non-school vehicles resulted in 940 youth fatalities, including 76 teens driving. School transportation-related accidents result in an average of 131 children fatalities each year. Most of these accidents happen between 6-8 am and between 3-4 pm.
For vehicle crashes, three times as many people died in non-school buses as in school vehicles. In school buses accounted for an average of 8 crashes and 12 fatalities per year. Impacts with the front of a school bus killed 45% of pedestrians involved in school bus accidents.
Staying Safe in a Vehicle
In a school bus, remind your students to sit forward in their seats and wait until the bus driver tells them to get on or off the bus. In a car, seat belts, car seats, and booster seats should be properly used at all times. Parents and teens should do their best to avoid distracted driving and put cell phones away when in the car. Drivers, keep your eyes open and watch for children, especially around schools and between 6-8 am and 3-4 pm. Remember to always stop for a school bus that is loading or unloading passengers
One of the most important things your child should know is to be predictable as a pedestrian. Make sure your kids walk on the sidewalk, not in the street, and always cross at crosswalks. Kids should not run or horse around in or near the street. When they wait for the bus, children should always stand at least 5 steps from the curb. They can also wear bright or reflective clothing can help improve visibility and reduce accidents.
