Houston NuvaRing Lawsuit Attorney
Were you injured by the NuvaRing birth control device?
NuvaRing is a flexible plastic ring that releases a low dose of progestin and estrogen. It is a form of birth control that lasts for three weeks then is replaced. NuvaRing is a prescription-only device manufactured by Merck & Co. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved its use in October 2001 and marketing began the following July. Many women chose NuvaRing as a birth control method because they could put it in themselves. The NuvaRing also releases a lower dose of estrogen than with oral contraceptive pills or the birth control patch. A growing number of women are switching birth control methods because they experienced adverse events with NuvaRing.
If you experienced an adverse side effect while using NuvaRing, contact a Houston pharmaceutical litigation attorney from Stern Law Group to discuss your case.
There are two main categories of adverse events: device-related events and device-caused medical conditions. Clinical trials were conducted to ascertain the actual risk of these events in patients. The studies found that 2.5 percent of NuvaRing users experienced foreign object sensation, sexual problems and expulsion of the device. According to data from clinical trials, some device-caused medical conditions included:
- Vaginitis (14.1 percent)
- Headaches (9.8 percent)
- Upper respiratory tract infection (8 percent)
- Leukorrhea (5.8 percent)
- Sinusitis (5.7 percent)
- Nausea (5.2 percent)
- Weight gain (4.9 percent)
These statistics were compiled from a 2001 medical review of NuvaRing released by the FDA. The first recorded NuvaRing lawsuit was filed in 2008. Since then, more than 700 other lawsuits have been filed against Merck & Co., distributors and NuvaRing marketers in both state and federal courts. Merck & Co. may have concealed the potential risks associated with NuvaRing.
Other Possible NuvaRing Side Effects
Merck & Co. identifies some other possible side effects of NuvaRing. These warnings are included on the NuvaRing website as well as on the product's warning label: Cardiovascular side effects (for those who smoke), blood clots, stroke, heart attack, vaginal infections, vaginal irritation and vaginal secretion. NuvaRing also uses a different type of progestin than is used in many other types of low-dose birth controls, but there is no known connection between this type of progestin and an increased risk of blood clots. Any negative side effect you may experience should be reported to the FDA.
