ValturnaBlood Pressure Prescription Valturna's Dangerous Side Effects

Valturna is a drug prescribed to treat high blood pressure and decrease the risk of stroke and heart attack. The drug is manufactured by Novartis, but this pharmaceutical company recently agreed to this drug from the market due to increased association with serious health risks. Valturna contains the drugs aliskiren and valsartan. Aliskiren is a renin inhibitor and was approved by the FDA in 2007 to treat primary hypertension. In 2011 clinical trials, researchers had to discontinue the trials because patients were experiencing an increased risk of nonfatal stroke, renal (kidney) complications, hypotension and other types of renal impairment. Now, all drugs that contain aliskiren have to include this risk on their warning labels.

Who can take aliskiren-based drugs?

Because the serious health risks associated with aliskiren are now evident, the FDA discourages healthcare professionals from prescribing this drug to certain individuals. Any product containing aliskiren should not be prescribed to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment. Doctors should always avoid prescribing aliskiren-based drugs with angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) or angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs). If you are currently taking Valturna, your doctor should notify you of the risks of the drug as well as the recent recall. Doctors should avoid prescribing aliskiren-based drugs unless for the treatment of high blood pressure in "appropriate individuals."

What drugs contain aliskiren?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lists five prescription drugs available in the United States that contain aliskiren, one of them is Valturna, which Novartis stopped marketing in 2012. The four other prescription drugs containing aliskiren are:

  • Amturnide
  • Tekturna
  • Tekturna HCT
  • Tekamlo

If you are currently taking one of these medications, you should consult with your doctor about the risks versus the benefits of continuing the treatment. Any adverse event that could be connected to Valturna or an aliskiren drug should be reported to the FDA.
